Our mission is to connect community and take systems level action to ensure all people in Hawaiʻi have enough food to live healthy, dignified, productive lives.
— Hawai'i Hunger Action Network

Our Purpose

The Hawai‘i Hunger Action Network (HHAN) is a statewide collaborative of anti-hunger institutions and advocates working to ensure that Hawai‘i’s food system reflects the needs of all of its communities.

The HHAN’s purpose is to build the capacity of local advocates to work on state, regional and local policy priorities, educate policymakers on issues in our food system, foster cross-sector relationships, and advocate for systems change in Hawai‘i. HHAN is an emerging voice in Hawai‘i’s policy making process that strives to bring transparency to food systems legislation, and to re-envision a political process that includes a more diverse range of food systems stakeholders at the table.

Advocacy Areas

We prioritize taking action across 4 “advocacy areas:”

  1. Economic Supports: Making sure Hawai‘i’s systems don’t perpetuate poverty

  2. Public Benefits: Strengthening federal safety nets, like SNAP.

  3. Disaster Preparation & Response: Helping agencies coordinate and stay connected so they can better respond in times of crisis.

  4. Emergency Food Innovation: Supporting social service providers to go beyond charity and be agents of community resilience.
